RIM has lost a copyright battle to a US software company over the name of its new operating system BBX.
RIM announced in October its new operating system would be called BBX. However global software company, Basis International has had a software product called BBX (Business BASIS eXtended), since 1985.
Basis said RIM has refused requests to stop using the name and now a US Federal Court in Albuquerque has temporarily blocked RIM from using the name BBX.
Following this, an announcement was made at the BlackBerry Developer Conference (DevCon), which is currently taking place in Asia, stating that BBX would become BlackBerry 10.
According to Pocket-lint, a spokesperson said: “We don’t typically comment on pending litigation – but we actually unveiled the new brand for our next gen platform at DevCon Asia today (today Singapore time). We’ll be using the “BlackBerry 10″ brand name for our next generation mobile platform, which will bring the best of the BlackBerry and QNX platforms to customers and partners. The BlackBerry 10 name reflects the significance of the new platform and will leverage the global strength of the BlackBerry brand while also aligning with our device branding.”
Blackberry 10 (or BBX) is a new operating system designed to combine it’s Blackberry OS smartphone platform, with QNX used on the BlackBerry Playbook. We’re still waiting for the first device, which is rumoured to be called called the BlackBerry London.
