BlackBerry Music subscription service launches

Research in Motion has confirmed BBM Music; a Spotify-rivalling music service integrated into Blackberry Messenger, will be launching later this year with full track sharing.

For a monthly subscription of $4.99, BBM Music users can create a music profile of 50 tracks from all the major labels, which they can refresh with 25 new tracks every month. The most interesting thing however, is the ability to share you music with other BBM users. Invite them to join BMM Music and you’ll be able to listen to each others tracks without paying extra.

Every time a new friend joins, you can access their 50 tracks, thus the more BBM Music friends you have; the more music you can listen too. In addition create playlists from all tracks – yours and your friends – and you can even comment on other playlists.

With a track cap and shared playlists, BBM Music, even more so because all the tracks can be stored on your smartphone so they are available offline.

Mike Lazaridis from Research in Motion said: “More than 45 million customers already love the social communication benefits delivered through BBM and we are thrilled to be extending the experience into a uniquely social and interactive music service,”

With Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, EMI and Sony Music Entertainment on board – all the major music companies – there will be a wide selection of tunes to choose from.

Michael Nash from Warner Music Group comments: “Addressing more than 45 million BlackBerry Messenger users with a service tailor-made for its mobile community, BBM Music has the opportunity to reach a broad and engaged audience.”
Closed trials for BBM Music are starting today in the UK, Canada and US, with the full service becoming available later in the year. Sign up on the Blackberry website to keep updated on when it will launch.
