Facebook and Spotify join forces at F8 conference

Facebook and Spotify have teamed up to offer Facebook users streaming music, it was announced last night at Facebook’s F8 conference.

Starting any day now, little play buttons will start cropping up in your Facebook newsfeed, as friends recommend tracks for others to listen to. Your friends will also be able to track your listening habits, but don’t worry if you’ve been expertly hiding your Britney back catalogue up until now – you can opt out of the service through either Facebook or Spotify.

Aside from making music recommendations easier, Spotify also say that the social aspect of its Facebook presence (as well as its being free) will help to draw users away from piracy. “We knew that the service had to be free to draw people away from piracy.” Say Spotify on their website. “We also knew that the service would have to be inherently social. There couldn’t be a better place to do this than Facebook.”

We’re waiting for word back from Spotify as to when precisely the service will launch. In the meantime, time to start pruning that Spotify playlist for general consumption.
