Facebook Zero: Text-only for phones that aren’t smart

Facebook has announced that it will launch a stripped-down version of its mobile website, called Facebook Zero. This low bandwidth, text-only site is perfect for those using handsets without a dedicated Facebook app, with poor web browsing abilities or for accessing the site in areas with poor 3G reception.

An image-less Facebook site may help keep mobile data usage down in the UK, as we obviously can’t get enough of poking, liking and generally spying on our friends. The GSM Association recently revealed that 5 million people used their phones to access Facebook in December 2009, and that nearly half the time spent online using a phone that month was spent at the social networking site.

The size zero site is already live (http://zero.facebook.com) but can’t be accessed from handsets just yet. It is expected to be availableo on UK networks within the next few weeks.
