Google: 250 million Android activations, 11 billion app downloads

We know that plenty of you found something Android-powered ‘neath the tinselly boughs this Christmas just gone. Google’s figures for the last quarter of 2011 however put the the seasonal splurge into perspective.

Over 250 million Android phones have been activated globally with over 11 billion apps downloaded from the Android Market. That’s an amazing achievement in itself, made all the more amazing when you consider Google’s 10 billion promotion that kicked off last December.

For ten days, ten of the most popular apps were being flogged for just 10p in the Android Market. This news basically means that between the 6th and 31st of December 2011, a further billion apps were downloaded, in less than a month.
Google’s quarterly income also shot past $10 billion (£6.457 billion) for the first time, according to Google CEO Larry Page.

“I am super excited about the growth of Android, Gmail, and Google+, which now has 90 million users globally – well over double what I announced just three months ago. By building a meaningful relationship with our users through Google+ we will create amazing experiences across our services. I’m very excited about what we can do in 2012 – there are tremendous opportunities to help users and grow our business.”
