Google Nexus S: First Gingerbread phone announced, doesn’t come cheap

The Google Nexus S has been officially revealed as the follow-up to the Google Nexus One. Running the latest iteration of Android, 2.3 (aka Gingerbread, check out the main features here), the handset could be in your hands before Christmas.

The Samsung-made Nexus S features a 4-inch Super AMOLED screen, 16GB of internal memory, 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor and Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.

It’s this NFC that sets the handset slightly apart from the ridiculously-similar Samsung Galaxy S. The technology gives the phone the ability to read information any object embedded with NFC tags; this could be anything from additional features embedded in an advert to the ability to make payments with your phone.

The Google Nexus S also offers a curved screen; Google says this is a world first, “designed to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand and along the side of your face”. We’re certainly looking forward to trying that out…

All this comes with a hefty price tag, however. To pick up the Nexus S SIM-free will set you back £549.95 – what do they think it is, an iPhone? There’s also a free contract option though – the handset comes gratis with a £35-a-month deal.

During the limited pre-Christmas release, the Google Nexus S will be available from Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy. Pre-ordering is now available from Carphone Warehouse; just head over to the retailer’s site to sign up.
