With a heavy heart, HTC has announced to its loyal likers on Facebook that its Desire won’t be getting a second upgrade to Gingerbread Android.
In their own words: “Our engineering teams have been working hard for the past few months to find a way to bring Gingerbread to the HTC Desire without compromising the HTC Sense experience you’ve come to expect from our phones.
“However, we’re sorry to announce that we’ve been forced to accept there isn’t enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire. We’re sincerely sorry for the disappointment that this news may bring to some of you.”
So it looks like the HTC Desire has finally reached its physical limit. But the phone’s managed to scrape through an Android 2.2 update mid-way, which is better than a lot of other phones have faired on Android.
Reactions have been mixed, with several people commenting on forums and HTC’s own Facebook page that they’ve doctored their own route to Android Gingerbread through more unsavoury methods.
Several smartphone forums already have the unofficial version of Android Gingerbread on ROM files, but using them is done at your own risk. We’ve warned you.
Others, incensed, are saying that they’ll never buy a HTC phone again.
But HTC have a good track-record on their Android upgrades; the HTC Incredible S has recently been switched to Android 2.3, whilst the Desire’s bigger brother, the Desire HD is now available in Gingerbread clothing, provided your phone network’s got it sorted.
