HTC One S micro arc oxidation explained

The HTC One S might not boast the quad-core power of its HTC One X sibling but it does boast a super-durable premium finish.

The metal unibody jacket of the HTC One S is subjected to a process known as micro arc oxidation. This is an electrochemical process which toughens and strengthens the aluminium body of the HTC One S.

HTC is saying that it’s using “aircraft 6000 series aluminium,” for the One S, which is then blasted with 10,000 volts of energy making it tougher than aerospace-grade metal.

The HTC One S parts emerge with a ceramic effect that gives is a premium feel as well as extra durability. HTC has previously told us that were you to scratch your nail on the body of the ceramic HTC One S, it’s more likely that your nail will be worn down rather than the body of the phone. We don’t recommend you using your HTC One S as a nail file though.

Note that this process is applied only to the ceramic effect version of the HTC One S; the anodized version of the HTC One S which we saw at Mobile World Congress is subjected to a different toughening process.
