Hurricane Sandy forces Google to can tablet launch event

Google has cancelled its big Nexus launch today as Hurricane Sandy storms into New York.

In a statement, the Android OS developer said, “We are cancelling our Monday morning event in New York due to Hurricane Sandy. We will let you know our plans as soon as we know more. Stay safe and dry, The Android Team,”

The widely leaked Google Nexus 10 tablet was expected to be released at the event. The tablet is seen as one of the best rivals to the Apple iPad. It was also expected to show off its latest Android 4.2 (Key Lime Pie) operating system.

Leaked news of the tablet suggests that it would include a Samsung Exynos 5250 dual-core chip running at 1.7GHz and a Mali-T604 graphics processor allowing it to have a display resolution of 2,560 by 1,600 pixel on a 10.1 inch screen.

The launch was to be held on a waterfront pier, which now finds itself in an evacuation zone. On Friday New York governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency in response to oncoming hurricane – one of the worst to batter the US east coast in years.

The cancellation now means that Microsoft will have a clear run today to launch its new mobile OS, Windows Phone 8, which is being held in San Francisco on the west coast of America.

Last year, Google was forced to moved its launch of the Ice Cream Sandwich Android OS following the death of Apple founder Steve Jobs.
