Ice Cream Sandwich allows USB gamepads, big screen gaming

Have you ever sat in front of your TV and just wished you could use your phone as a console? Rock some Angry Birds on the big screen with a proper controller so you can take out those pigs with deadly accuracy? Good, because that’s exactly what can happen with Ice Cream Sandwich and the Galaxy Nexus.

We already knew the Galaxy Nexus would be able to pair with your TV via HDMI thanks to MHL, and now it looks like there’s support for other USB devices such as gamepads and controllers too. By their powers combined, effectively your Galaxy Nexus turns into a mini console, throwing your games up on the big screen and still being able to play and control them without being limited to the phone’s touch screen.

It’s not a totally new idea – with the introduction of iOS 5, Apple’s AirPlay allows you to stream games to your Apple TV for gaming on the big screen, wirelessly to boot. The Galaxy Nexus solution could be a bit messy with the wires, but then again you don’t have to make another investment in a separate box to be able to get your game on.

Of course, all of this requires you to actually have a Galaxy Nexus, and we still don’t know exactly when we can get our hands on one. Don’t sell your PS3 or Xbox just yet.
