Ice Cream Sandwich alpha on Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S, neo V and ray

Ice Cream Sandwich. The words on everyone’s lips. How manufacturers will adopt this latest sugar-delight from Google is becoming hotly debated. An officially endorsed release however from Sony Ericsson does an incredible job of shedding some light upon just what their Xperia line will look like post ICS update, releasing an alpha ROM into the wild coupled with a very comprehensive video.

Perhaps the most heavily skinned mainstream Android line behind HTC’s range, the Sony Ericsson Xperia handsets are thickly laden with their own UI. This has worried fans of late, keen to get as much of what makes Ice Cream Sandwich better than Gingerbread onto their Xperias. Many fears should however be dispelled.

As you will see in the video of ICS on the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S, you have to dig a little into the UI to see the changes, but with the multi-tasking, notifications tab functionality and settings all getting Ice Cream Sandwiched to the nines, new Android is definitely there and is looking good. Unfortunately, given the alpha status the ROM wouldn’t be functional day to day, without the ability to make calls or go online, but it sets a president for a level of openness between consumer and manufacturer that we seldom see and can be installed on any Sony Ericsson Xperia ray, neo V and arc S.
