Intel are reportedly planning to bring a Medfield powered smartphone to CES in conjunction with LG.
An LG executive told The Korea Times that “LG Electronics will produce Intel’s first Android smart phones that use Intel’s own mobile platform”, and that the device will be shown at CES. Intel Korea chief Lee Hee-sung also confirmed that “Intel’s chief executive Paul Otellini will release Intel’s first Android smart phone using our own platform at the CES”.
It’s not the first time LG and Intel have joined forces to show off such a smartphone. They did so at last years CES too, although the handset was never released.
The CES unveiling makes sense, especially due to leaked specs and benchmarks seen just last week. A reference platform running at 1.6Ghz with 1GB of RAM managed to best both Nvidia’s Tegra 2 and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon MSM8260, although power draw was higher than both. Getting an x86 chip to sip juice like an ARM chip seems to be the real challenge Intel face on the road to mass production.
