Intel to launch new Tizen OS, Meego gets binned

So it’s all over for MeeGo. That’s the word on the street after Nokia released its N9 smartphone, reportedly the last smartphone to run the Intel operating system. But never fear not, fans of the alternative mobile operating system, because Intel has revealed that it will be launching yet another operating system for its future handsets in the coming months.

The new mobile operating system, called Tizen, will be open source and run on a modified version of Linux, reportedly to better take advantage of new developments in HTML 5. Writes Intel: “We believe the future belongs to HTML5-based applications, outside of a relatively small percentage of apps, and we are firmly convinced that our investment needs to shift toward HTML5.”

According the folks at MeeGo, however, the change won’t be too radically different from what its customers are used to already. “A lot of things will be the same as they were in the MeeGo.” Says Imad Sousou, Director of the Intel Open Source Technology Cente. “Much like MeeGo, the Tizen project will support multiple device categories, including Tablets, Netbooks, Handsets, Smart TV, and In-Vehicle Infotainment systems.”

You can find out more on the new mobile OS at the official Tizen website.
