Pictures of what’s being called case shots for the iPad 3 have surfaced. At a glance they appear to hint at a bit more interior space, while largely looking the same as the iPad 2’s curvy metal externals. This is fuelling speculation that the iPad 3 will either have a bigger battery, a quad-core chip, or a dual-core chip with an advanced GPU for high-end graphics and video.
While peering at the innards of a gadget’s case and guessing what’s to be inside is akin to reading the future from tea leaves, the chaps at RepairLabs have made a pretty educated guess:
“You can see here that the mounts for the logic board are very different, which means the logic board shape will be different allowing for… More battery. The width of where the logic board sits on the iPad 2 appears much larger than that of the iPad 3. We have long heard that the iPad 3 was going to provide longer battery life, and this back housing seems to support that.”
If there’s one area we’d like to see Apple gadgets – and all gadgets for that matter – upping their game then it’s in battery longevity. There’s nothing to say that the extra space won’t be taken up by other components though, though given the complaints Apple has received over the iPhone 4S’s not that great battery, we’d wager that Apple’s next product ought to have a more robust power offering.
RepairLabs’ assessment also points to a larger camera mount, hinting at a more powerful camera unit. A camera capable of HD video recording? This would tie in nicely with rumours of a more powerful processor rig than the iPad 2’s A5. 9to5 Mac’s two cents on the leaked cases comes with a separate shot, courtesy of Apple.pro of the iPad 3 case form the outside, where you can just about make out a bigger space for the camera.
Whatever’s actually inside the iPad 3, emergence of these cases makes us confident for that rumoured March launch.
