iPhone 4S official, October 14th launch

Apple have finally unveiled their latest and greatest handset, the iPhone 4S. Cosmetically the device is almost identical to the iPhone 4: it retains the same 3.5” 960×640 IPS display and the same industrial design, although the steel antenna band has been modified to accommodate dual GSM/CDMA reception.

What’s on the inside is what really counts: you’ll find a dual-core A5 processor with 7x faster graphics over the A4. There’s also an 8 megapixel camera with improved sensor and new macro mode, as well as 1080p video recording. Storage wise you’ll still looking at 16 and 32GB models, although those with a serious need for media on the go will be glad to see the introduction of a 64GB model. 3G capabilities have also been bumped up to HSDPA, capable of 14.4Mbit/s download speeds.

The 4S will also be sporting Siri, what Apple call “your intelligent assistant that helps you get things done just be asking.” If you want to know the weather, for example, then just hold down the Home button and Siri will give you the current forecast. The feature works with numerous questions, as well as performing basic functions such as setting up an alarm, giving you directions, and even sending messages.

Battery life hasn’t taken a hit with all that extra power either, with 3G talk time rated at 8 hours, 3G browsing at 6 hours, Wi-Fi browsing at 9 hours, video playback at 10 hours, and music playback at 40 hours.

The iPhone 4S will be available in black or white starting October 14th, with pre-orders beginning on the 7th. UK pricing hasn’t been revealed yet, although O2 have been quick to note via Twitter that they will be selling the phone come the 14th.
