Leaked LG G2 images hint at new and unusual design

We know that LG is preparing a follow-up to last year’s LG Optimus G, and we know that the company is holding an event in August that might just be an announcement for its next flagship smartphone. Is the company going to ditch its Optimus branding, though? Possibly, according to stills from a video tipped to Twitter leakster @evleaks.

The handset may simply be known as the LG G2, with that famous Optimus branding nowhere to be seen. The design also looks to be a radical departure from what we’ve seen on past LG handsets too. Gone are the capacitive Android buttons on the bottom of the phone, with what looks to be an edge-to-edge display filling the front of the handset while cutting down on bezel.

The back is the most intriguing part, though. Right below the camera and LED flash, you can see what looks to be a volume rocker along with an unidentifiable button. That falls in line with a report from etnews back in April that claimed the handset would have the home and volume buttons on the back in order to cut down on overall thickness. The design of the handset seems to match previous leaks as well, showing the LG logo at the bottom of the phone rather than navigation keys.

If the images turn out to be real, then it would be a very unusual – if not interesting – design choice for LG, and it could just be what the company needs to compete with the likes of Samsung and HTC. LG is holding an event in New York on August 7th, so we’ll find out exactly what the South Korean manufacturer has in store for us then.
