Meego: Nokia and Intel join Linux forces

Today Nokia and Intel announced that they are combining Moblin and Maemo to create MeeGo, a new mobile platform. According to Nokia, MeeGo is a unified Linux-based platform that will run on multiple hardware platforms across a wide range of computing devices, including pocketable mobile computers, netbooks, tablets, phones, connected TVs and in-vehicle systems.

MeeGo will coexist with Symbian but Maemo will cease to exist in its current format. The idea behind MeeGo is to offer a cross-platform experience for users, allowing them to use apps across multiple devices. MeeGo-based devices from Nokia and other manufacturers are expected to be launched later this year. The Linux Foundation will host the MeeGo project.
