Nike unveils the next generation of accelerometer with Nike+ Fuelband

Things have moved a long way since collecting tokens from cereal packets in the world of “step-counters”. This cannot be more true when looking at the new Fuelband smart wristband just released by Nike. The device uses a built in accelerometer to track the bearers every move, delivering the match report at days end. It measures the number of steps taken, calories burned, time spent and converts it into “Nike Fuel”, which awards a score based on activity made that day.

Once armed with one of these fashionable devices, the wearer can set themselves targets for each day and build on these as they progress. An LED display on the wristband indicates when the bearer reaches their target, turning from red to green.

Once the activity is over, owners can upload their progress to the Nike+ website via USB or using an iPhone app that they can update via bluetooth – Android predicted to come soon. The resulting information produces timelines of activity throughout the day, supposed to replicate high impact activity and slim down on downtime.

You can check out the intro video below and the device is available now in the US priced at $149, not cheap, and the Nike website is currently showing it as sold-out. Fuelband will be available to purchase in other regions in due course, for the UK some have commented it could be around February time.
