The Nokia 808 Pure View was always going to offer impressive imaging, being the successor to the Nokia N8, however with its 41-megapixel sensor we find ourselves wavering between the point of impressed and dumbfounded at what’s been crammed into Nokia’s latest handset announced at MWC this morning.
With mobile sensors being physically tiny when compared to those of SLRs for example, first impressions are it makes little sense to ram double the number of pixels into one. That said, Nokia would beg to differ. Justifying their big numbers with lossless zooming and better quality shots at a lower resolution.
By cropping in on its huge sensor therefore, you can still get a true 12-megapixel picture after 3x zoom. In addition, down-sampling from 41-megapixels, the Pure View is best able to select the right pixel to create in a 5, 8 or 12-megapixel shot for better looking, more printable images. There’s also a Xenon flash on board too for the best possible chance to get a well-lit indoor shot.
Packing full HD video with up to 4x lossless zoom, the Nokia Pure View shoots at 30fps and couples this with sound recording technology thus far unseen on a mobile, capable of capturing up to 140db – beyond that capable of human hearing.
Running Nokia Belle, the Nokia 808 Pure View also packs a 4-inch AMOLED display with Nokia’s Clear Black technology on board which should help show off the pictures as well as possible, even in outdoor lighting. There is also a 1.3GHz processor under the hood along with 16GB of on-board memory. Couple that with micro SD card support and you’re looking at up to 48GB total storage space.
With the Nokia N8 doing very well for an older handset in our recent camera comparison, we can’t wait to get our hands on the Nokia 808 Pure View for a review and shoot-out against the old master.
