Nokia rebrands its services: Ovi is over

Nokia has announced that Ovi will be no more, with all of its services on the Finnish phone giant’s devices renamed under the umbrella of Nokia Services.

Its new name is admittedly a bit dull, but makes infinitely more sense. (Sadly, who’s heard of Ovi?)

Chief Marketing Officer at Nokia, Jerri DeVard, said on Nokia’s site: “We have made the decision to change our service branding from Ovi to Nokia. By centralizing our services identity under one brand, not two, we will reinforce the powerful master brand of Nokia and unify our brand architecture – while continuing to deliver compelling opportunities and experiences for partners and consumers alike.”

Nokia are explaining it as more of an evolution than abandonment; the Ovi Store and Ovi Maps are two of the core parts that will be afffected by the change.

It’s been said that the change is due to the forthcoming launch of Nokia’s Windows Phone 7 handsets, where Nokia’s apps and services will soon be available across the whole Windows Phone 7 range. This will also keep the Nokia name visible across other phone-maker’s WP7 handsets.

Nokia stuff on their rivals’ phone? Feels a little bit like playing Sonic on the Nintendo Wii- a bit wrong.
