Nokia’s Android prototype spotted: Another N9-alike running another OS

The Nokia surprises just keep on coming this week. First of all there was the announcement of the Nokia N9, a super-powerful smartphone that runs on MeeGo – an OS that most thought was dead in the water.

Then there was the ‘accidental leak’ of the Sea Ray – the codename for Nokia’s first Windows Phone 7 phone – which we saw yesterday. And now there’s this, an unnamed, unannounced Nokia phone that looks to be running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Like the Sea Ray, the physical body of this Nokia Android looks an awful lot like the enlarged iPod stylings of the N9. We’re not 100 per cent sure if this is genuine, but we can’t rule out the possibility that this is a test device; it’s highly likely that this is a prototype model from when Nokia was testing OSs with which to make it’s big comeback.

Nokia has very much nailed its colours to the Microsoft mast, so the chances of this ever arriving in stores is unlikely, to say the least.

Naturally we’re excited about getting our mitts on the first Nokia Windows Phone 7 device. But this leak gives us a glimpse of how things might have been if Nokia had opted join Team Android instead. Like one of those ‘alternative history’ novels where the Confederate States of America didn’t lose the Civil War, or something.

More seriously, we’d like to see how a Nokia phone with a big 8-megapixel camera would handle Android camera apps like Retro Camera and work with the new OCR-tastic Google Docs app.

We can’t help but wonder what other gems are going to come out of the Nokia rumour mine next; an N9-alike running webOS?
