Samsung’s ‘Galaxy Gear’ smartwatch fully detailed in new report

Multiple reports have suggested that Samsung will introduces its “Galaxy Gear” smartwatch on September 4th. Now GigaOm has shared more details about the watch, including the specifications and how it will integrate with other products from Samsung.

According to GigaOm’s report, the watch will include a “high quality” 320×320 OLED display measuring 2.5-inches diagonally, although the entire watch face will occupy 3-inches. Specifications for the watch are said to include a dual-core Exynos processor clocked at 1.5Ghz, as well as a Mali-400 MP4 GPU. The strap for the watch will also apparently house a camera, along with “tiny speakers”, Bluetooth 4.0, and NFC.

But it’s the intended purpose of Samsung’s watch that makes it interesting. GigaOm believes that Samsung will try to position it as a rival to the Nike+ Fuelband, as the Galaxy Gear will include hardware and software designed to track fitness achievements. And even if the fitness angle doesn’t interest people, the watch can still be used for email and message notifications, integrating tightly with Samsung’s Galaxy line of Android smartphones.

Samsung may not continue to rely on the Play Store either. GigaOm hears that Samsung will offer watch applications through its own app store instead, possibly to reduce reliance on Google, or maybe just to emulate Apple’s “walled garden” approach to mobile devices.

We’ll find out exactly what Samsung has in store on September 4th. The company is planning an Unpacked event a few days before the official start of IFA 2013, with the Galaxy Note 3 expected to make an appearance along with the alleged “Galaxy Gear”.
