Samsung planning Galaxy S4 with LTE Advanced

Are you ready for yet another Galaxy S4 variant just weeks after the release of the supposed flagship? Samsung CEO JK Shin has stated that an additional model will be on the way shortly. Reuters reports that the company is planning a Galaxy S4 variant that will feature LTE Advanced technology, resulting in data speeds that are twice as fast.

Not only that, but the new Galaxy S4 model might see a slight specs change too to accommodate the new LTE speeds. Android Beat spotted a report by Korean publication ETNews earlier today, suggesting that Samsung will push out a device with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 800 chipset that’s capable of supporting LTE Advanced. Add that to JK Shin’s latest nugget of information, and it looks like a Snapdragon 800 Galaxy S4 is on the way.

Having said that, there’s only one operator in the world that supports LTE Advanced right now, a Russian network called Yota. EE has indicated in the past that it intends to support LTE Advanced, saying in April that the technology was “absolutely on our roadmap”, but the network didn’t give any clearer information. Even if you look towards the US, there aren’t any definitive plans for bringing the faster speeds to market – you’ll only find vague promises.

Faster LTE speeds sound great in theory, but there’s a ton of work that needs to happen behind the scenes to make everything work. Chip makers all need to add support for the technology before carriers and networks can even begin to roll out the increased data throughput. That’s not even taking into account the LTE situation here in the UK. Even when O2, Vodafone, and Three officially launch their networks, they’ll only be offering standard speeds to begin with. All in all, things are moving along, but don’t expect to be seeing LTE Advanced in the near future.
