Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini: All the facts UPDATED

We’ve got the full specs and photos of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini ahead of Samsung’s official launch, stay tuned for UK pricing and release date.

Smartphones are so flipping huge now that manufacturers have to keep putting out ‘mini’ versions, to suit anyone that doesn’t have hands like Andre the Giant. Samsung’s Galaxy S5 is a typically massive flagship phone, so the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini was already inevitable when the flagship emerged.

Samsung hasn’t officially launched the Galaxy S5 Mini yet, but it hasn’t kept the mini phone in its pants either, and full details have already leaked. So we already know the Galaxy S5 Mini will sport a 4.5-inch screen, marginally bigger than last year’s 4.3-inch Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. Not really that small, then. And disappointingly, the S5 Mini makes do with the same plasticky shell as the full-sized model.

Thankfully the Galaxy S5 Mini is at least water resistant, and sports the same fingerprint scanner and heartrate monitor of its full-sized sibling.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini: will it keep the heart rate monitor and fingerprint scanner?

Sadly, like the Galaxy S4 Mini before it, the Galaxy S5 Mini will slash the full-sized Galaxy S5’s specs as well as its size. Expect a weaker 1.4GHz quad-core processor, backed up by 1.5GB of RAM, to power Samsung’s new mobile, while the 4.5-inch Super AMOLED screen cuts back to 720p resolution (to be fair, all you need in a screen this size).

You’ll get a cut-down 8-megapixel camera (so no 4k mode or other powerful camera features), although at least the front-facer is still a crisp 2.1-megapixels. A 2,100mAh battery should hopefully give you a full day of battery life, and 4G and NFC support is of course included. And expect Samsung’s usual features such as Ultra Power Saving Mode and S Health to make an appearance.

All this of course means that the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is still our favourite mini phone, packing the same incredible specs of the full-sized Xperia Z1 into a great little body that’s easy to use one-handed.

We’ll bring you a full Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini review soon.
