Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0): 7-inches of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich action

Samsung has just announced its first Android tablet to run Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0).

Featuring a 1GHz dual-core processor and a 7-inch 1024×600 (WSVGA) screen the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) will be coming in 3G and Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi only iterations. Other hardware spoecs include a 3-mdgapixel main camera, a VGA front-facing camera and A-GPS and GLONASS for sat-nav apps coming to the 3G version only.

As with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 from last year, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 will come with Samsung’s ChatON IM client pre-installed alongside some new services called AllShare Play and S Suggest.

AllShare Play allows you to live-stream content from the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) to PCs and Samsung smart devices (like TV sets) as well as transferring content between PCs and similar devices. Could be interesting – MOTOCAST was one of the things we really liked about the Motorola XOOM 2 and XOOM 2 Media Edition, so we’re interested to see how this fares.

S Suggests will post real-time recommends of apps and games suited to your tastes as and when you download apps from the Android Market. Sounds like it could be useful if you’re a tower defence addict and you want a new game to try out, or it could be Samsung’s answer to Microsoft’s old paperclip of hate.

The spec sheet mentions TouchWiz, but doesn’t mention which version – TouchWiz 6.0 perhaps? These press renders give us a clue of what the interface of the Samsung Galaxy S2 might look like post-Ice Cream Sandwich and what the Galaxy S3 might come a-packing.

No UK price or release date is forthcoming as of yet but we’d be highly surprised if we didn’t see the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) at Mobile World Congress.

Simon Stanford, UK & IRE Telecommunications & Networks Division said in a statement that: “We have actively worked to enhance and extend our tablet offering since the launch of the original Galaxy Tab 18 months ago, to put us in the position we are in today of being able to offer our customers a portfolio of devices of varying sizes relative to their different needs. We are delighted to be offering our customers even more choice with our latest tablet which is our first to feature Android 4.0.”
