Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 reportedly features Intel Clover Trail processor

Intel has provided chips for several phones and tablets in the past, but the company may have its sight set on Samsung. Reuters reports that an upcoming version of the Galaxy Tab will feature an Intel Atom Clover Trail processor rather than an ARM chip. It would be an interesting move for Samsung given than the company has used its own Exynos chips – as well as Qualcomm processors – in the past.

And if the report is true, then it would signify a major victory for Intel. The chip maker has been trying to work its way into the mobile industry for several years, but the company has faced strong competition from vendors like Qualcomm and Nvidia. Scoring a major OEM like Samsung could help Intel to squeeze its processors into additional Android devices in the future.

SamMobile first reported on the use of an Atom chip in the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 a few weeks ago. Benchmarks indicated the tablet would feature a dual-core processor clocked at 1.6Ghz, along with a 10.1-inch 1280×800 display. The performance was impressive too – the benchmarks seem to put the chip around the same area as the Snapdragon 600 and Exynos 5 Octa-core processor.

VentureBeat then confirmed with its own sources last week that Intel had secured a deal with Samsung. The publication noted, however, that the tablet would come in multiple versions, including one with Samsung’s own Exynos chip. It seems clear that Intel will make an appearance in one of Samsung’s tablets, then, with new models expected to be announced at the company’s upcoming June 20th event. We’ll find out more then and bring you the latest as it happens.
