Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 announced, features 7-inch screen and dual-core processor

Samsung has today announced the latest in its line of tablets, the Galaxy Tab 3. The sequel to the Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Tab 2 doesn’t feature radically different specifications, but the design has been brought in line with other Samsung products, such as the Galaxy S III and Galaxy S4. Samsung also says that the bezel surrounding the screen has been cut down to give the tablet a smaller profile.

Specifications for the Galaxy Tab 3 include a 7-inch 1024×600 display along with a 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8 or 16GB of internal storage, and a 3-megapixel rear camera. There’s also a 1.3-megapixel front facing camera for video calls, and a microSD card slot will help bump storage up to an additional 64GB. It’s all powered by a 4,000mAh battery and packed into a 9.9mm thick chassis.

Samsung will be releasing a Wi-Fi-only version of the Galaxy Tab 3 initially, but a 3G equipped version is also on the way. That variant will support HSPA+ speeds up to 21Mbit/s using the 850/900/1900/2100 bands. The company says that the Wi-Fi model will be available sometime in May, while the 3G version will be released in June.

It doesn’t look like the South Korean company is doing anything particularly interesting with this version of the Galaxy Tab, and the specs aren’t anything to get excited about either. It doesn’t compare too favourably to the Nexus 7, for instance, unless Samsung can significantly undercut the price of Google and Asus’ tablet. Even then, you’d be wise to hold off on a purchase: reports suggest that we’ll be seeing a refreshed version of the Nexus 7 at Google I/O that will bring a higher resolution screen and faster Qualcomm processor.
