Skype for Android sees redesign as it passes 100 million installs

Skype took to its blog yesterday to inform the world that Skype for Android had surpassed 100 million installs. It’s an impressive milestone, but the Android app in its old iteration wasn’t exactly a joy to use compared to the desktop version. Thankfully, that’s no longer the case, as Skype has rolled out a redesign for the Android app that brings it more in line with the Metro styling found on Windows Phone.

Most tellingly, Skype has put messaging front and center when you sign into the redesigned app, probably in response to the popularity of alternatives such as WhatsApp, Viber, and Line. Otherwise, the app has been greatly simplified, with flatter design elements and lots of white space mixed in with the blue colour scheme. Accessing contacts can be easily done with a few short swipes, and voice or video calls can be made with a quick tap even when you’re simply messaging someone.

Skype says that further improvements will be coming to the Android app in the future. For now, though, you can enjoy the redesigned version by heading over to the Play Store. If you’re not totally sold and want a sneak peek before updating, then the short demonstratrion above should sway you one way or the other.
