It’s turning into a good month to get into console gaming. After Nintendo’s 3DS price was slashed down to half price and the Sony Xperia Play took its own tumble down the pricing ladder, Sony have now announced that the PSP and PlayStation 3 are to follow suit.
The PS3 is dropping from £250 down to around £199, bringing it in-line with the current Xbox 360’s asking price. The PSP, meanwhile, is getting a whole new release, with a budget version of the handheld launching for just 99 Euros (no word on UK pricing as yet).
The announcements were made by Andrew House, President and CEO of Sony Entertainment Europe, at the Sony press conference at GamesCom in Cologne. However, the new PSP pricing came as a surprise to an audience under the impression that the PSP would be retired ahead of the company’s newest handheld, the PlayStation Vita.
“Our strategy is to provide the best quality entertainment experience at accessible prices.” Said House. “We feel confident gamers can enjoy the incredible games available on PlayStation whatever level of investment suits their budget.”
