Sony Xperia S Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update coming mid-June

UPDATE: If you are one of the people that bought Sony’s flagship device, the Sony Xperia S, then this will be music to your ears – Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich will be available by June.

The news was confirmed by a Sony Xperia S support representative via the official Xperia S support forum, as reports Pocket Now:

Xperia S is planned to get ICS somewhere around late May/early June. That’s what’s been said and that’s still what we’re sticking to. Any other dates (such as “June/July”) is just speculation. The roll out is, as always, gradual and will not happen overnight for all phones. Some phones might get the update in late May whilst other will get in mid June etc.”

The Sony Xperia S is a fantastic smartphone, with a 12MP camera, NFC, impressive 4.3-inch HD display, 32GB of internal memory, a sleek design and Sony’s latest UI.  You can read our full review of the Sony Xperia S here, but although we were very impressed, the lack of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was frustrating.

It certainly doesn’t reflect well on Sony when both Samsung and HTC have recently launched their flagship devices with Android 4.0: Ice cream Sandwich right out of the box, with the HTC One series and forthcoming Samsung Galaxy S3 respectively.

UPDATED: XperiaBlog reports the support representative who made the original claim has now said: ‘OK looks like I’ve mixed things up, I’m really sorry for this. The ICS roll out for Xperia arc S, ray and neo V started some time ago. The rest of the 2011 Xperias will get ICS during late May/early June. Which was the timing I mixed with the Xperia S timing. Xperia S will get it during latter part of Q2.’

So Xperia S owners will have to wait a few weeks more until the end of June for the update
