The site that inadvertently gave hope to Xperia PLAY owners the world over just yesterday, now looks to be offering a legitimate ICS release for one other significant Sony handset. The Sony Xperia S has served as Sony’s 2012 flagship and the first device in the company’s portfolio to drop the Ericsson name.
PTCRB again has listed a certified release (build number 6.1.A.0.452, if you’re interested) of Ice Cream Sandwich which will be on its way to the Sony Xperia S (LG26I) very soon. The time between certification and general release is not yet confirmed, but if Sony want to keep to its own schedule, users should start seeing signs of new life appearing in the next 10 days.
Unveiled at CES alongside the LTE-capable Sony Xperia ion (which is said to be coming to the UK in GSM form), the S saw a positive reception at launch and boasted some impressive hardware, including a 12-megapixel camera, a beautiful 4.3-inch HD display and NFC support for Sony’s Smart Tags. The biggest shortcoming that makes it standout amongst Android flagship devices currently is that it only made it out the gate running 2.3.x Gingerbread.
Despite numerous usability enhancements and a lot of care and attention when improving the Sony Android user experience, the underlying OS has remained on Android Gingerbread, which after a year and a half, is showing its age, particularly when the aforementioned flagship rivals have been sporting the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for weeks and months in the case of the HTC One X.
