Sony Xperia SP unboxing video

The Sony Xperia SP follows on from the water-resistant, quad-core, Full HD Sony Xperia Z as the second phone in Sony’s 2013 line-up. Pegged slightly below the Z, it offers up a 1.7GHz dual-core processor as well as a 4.6-inch 720p display. It’s a combination of classical and fun design with a squared off fascia like its bigger brother and a curved backing. Sony also brings back the transparent strip that was found on the Xperia S, Xperia P and Xperia U.

The Xperia SP is a handsome phone head-on. With no capacitive buttons, all interaction with the fascia is on the screen. There’s also a front facing camera and the transparent strip we spoke about at the base which lights up.

How does it light up? If you have a notification, it’ll let you know. If you’re playing a music track, it’ll light up, radiating the main colour from the album artwork. If you’re in your gallery, the main image colour will be echoed in the light strip.

The phone is plastic with all buttons on the right hands side. It’s also great to see a physical camera button on the Xperia SP, making for a shoe-in good experience when using the 8-megapixel Sony Exmor RS powered camera, regardless of picture quality.

The 720p screen is powered by Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine 2, helping to ensure vibrancy when viewing pictures and videos. At 4.6-inches, it’s large and perfect for text and web browsing off the bat.

Cramming 8GB of internal memory and a microSD card for expandability, there will be plenty of room for multimedia, and with its dual-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, that’s a good thing. This phone will power through full HD content and is even compatible with Sony’s Dual-Shock PS3 controller.
