Sony Xperia Z pricing discovered before CES unveiling

We have some of the specs, we have the launch date and most recently we found out the name. We’re adding the price tag to the list of things we’ve already discovered about the Sony Xperia Z ahead of it’s official unveiling in the coming days. The Z is the company’s new flagship and the first quad-core smartphone Sony Mobile has ever produced.

Sony Xperia Z pricing

Whilst we’re on the subject of things we already know about the Xperia Z, Russian mobile site mobile-review.com have already been able to put an early build of the Z through an extensive preview, but it was Thai blog SonyXP.com that provided this latest tidbit of information. When it eventually hits stores, the Sony Xperia Z is quoted to retail for 19990 Thai Baht which equates to around £410. Although not cheap, it doesn’t sound like an unreasonable SIM-free price for a handset with a quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and a Full HD 5-inch display.

In addition to the price, the Sony Xperia Z, which was previously on track to arrive anytime in Q1 this year now has a more accurate estimated arrival time for the start of March. We’ll know all there is about the Xperia Z come Monday at CES.

The Sony C6603 ‘Yuga’ was the one to watch at the end of 2012, slated to be the first Sony smartphone of 2013 and the company’s first quad-core handset, not to mention a Full HD display, it certainly piqued our interest.

We’d already seen a prototype caught on camera too, but now Sony have spilled their own beans ahead of CES 2013 where the handset is anticipated to launch at their official press event on January 7th. The Yuga’s official handle (as confirmed by the image name on Sony’s server and picked up by XperiaBlog) is the Sony Xperia Z and in this image it appears in a classic black outfit. The key specs anticipated to grace this handset haven’t changed since we first heard about it; with a 1080p Full HD 5-inch display, a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM and of course an extremely capable 12-megapixel camera.

Sony Xperia Z and Xperia ZL leaked images

One aspect of the Z that we hope will change from the rumoured spec sheet is the version of Android it runs out-the-box. We won’t get our hopes up as Sony aren’t known for their ability to keep ahead of the curve with regards to Android updates, but with the holiday season to work it over, we’re banking on the Xperia Z launching with Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean as opposed to version 4.1.1.

The Yuga wasn’t the only Sony to get a proper name and face ahead of next week. The Sony ‘Odin’ was also identified as the Sony Xperia ZL; utilising a similar spec sheet but within a different body. We anticipate that the ZL will be to the Z as the TX is to the Sony Xperia T, both of which were unveiled at IFA last year with the TX simply standing in as the company’s flagship for select Asian markets such as Japan.

Whether our assumptions are correct remains to be seen, but all will be revealed come Sunday. Also Happy New Year to all our readers!

The first quad-core Sony Mobile handset is no longer just a myth, the C6603 ‘Yuga’ is a possible contender for the post and we’re finally getting a glimpse of what it looks like.

Sony 'Yuga' 1

The handset itself features strong lines, swathed in black and face on it appears more squared than the current flagship, the Xperia T, more reminiscent of the Xperia S. It features a symmetrical design with the earpiece and the microphone at either end of the handset both cut into the top and bottom edges of the front respectively with the same trapezoid shape.

We can also see a front-facing camera that’ll likely support HD video above what’s apparently a 5-inch Full HD (1080p) display. The large display is also complemented by a thin bezel along the sides and as android-schweiz.ch, who posted the photos point out, the back also features a full glass face, much like the iPhone 4 and 4S.

Sony 'Yuga' 2

Hardware is also top notch, riding the wave created by the likes of the LG Optimus G and the LG Nexus 4, as it’s said to feature a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chip alongside 2GB of RAM; likely needed to make sure performance is optimised on such a large, high resolution screen. The camera on the back has a wealth of resolution options on offer, with the a 12-megapixel option at the top of the list. A closer look at the side of the Yuga also reveals a hardware shutter key next to a volume rocker and a centrally mounted power/lock key.

Sony 'Yuga' 5

To round it all off, the Yuga will likely arrive running Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean and receive one if not two significant Android upgrades in its lifetime. We’re doubtful that with all this high-end kit and the fact that the Sony Xperia T has barely had any time to shine in its own right, that the Yuga will arrive this year, but expect CES in Vegas at the start of 2013 to feature a powerful new player in the Android space.
