Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet hits UK stores today

Sony Mobile’s 2014 arsenal may be headed up by the forthcoming Xperia Z2, but its counterpart, the Xperia Z2 Tablet hits UK stores today.

Last year Mobile World Congress gave us the Sony Xperia Z Tablet, which focused on delivering powerful specs in the thinnest package the company could muster, not to mention it threw in some waterproofing too. The Xperia Z2 Tablet builds on exactly the same principles, distilling the most powerful Sony tech into an attractive, slim, durable body.

Available to purchase in the UK from today for £399 direct from Sony, the Xperia Z2 Tablet is tooled up to go toe-to-toe with the likes of Apple’s iPad Air and Samsung’s newest Pro line of tablets.

Not only is it stunning to look at, sporting a partially metal body that’s both thinner and lighter than last year’s model at 6.4mm and 426g (compared to 6.9mm and 495g), but it uses a richer, sharper 10.1-inch HD display and shares much of its DNA with the new Sony Xperia Z2 smartphone.

Qualcomm’s shiny Snapdragon 801 processor (clocked at 2.3GHz) lies at the heart of the beast, twinned to 3GB of RAM, so lag whilst navigating the user interface should be even less apparent then on last year’s model. There’s a sizable 6000mAh battery which Sony has boosted with a fast-charge feature that should give you up to 75 per cent of a full charge quicker than the next best slate.

The 8.1-megapixel camera on the back has some neat tricks up its sleeve such as Background Defocus and the new Vine mode for making six-second bite-sized video clips, although the killer 4K and slow-motion video recording modes found on the Z2 smartphone escape the Z2 Tablet. Le sigh.

The sub-£400 price for the WiFi-only model is actually about £100 less than what we were expecting post-MWC and with an LTE option on offer too, Apple might be starting to feel the heat. The Xperia Z2 Tablet offers 16GB of internal storage with microSD expandability by up to an additional 128GB as well.

Check out our hands-on to find out more about the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet and let us know if you’re tempted to pick one up. We’ll be putting it through the review gauntlet very soon.
