Sony Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact spotted in the wild?

Less than six months after Sony launched its latest flagship, the Xperia Z2, new photos have emerged online suggesting its follow-up isn’t far behind.

The leak was first posted on Chinese blog digi-wo.com – who have a solid track record when it comes to leaking what Sony is working on – and we’re shown two devices. The first is the supposed Xperia Z3 in a white body and rocking an attractively thin bezel, whilst the other is the Xperia Z3 Compact, clad in black. Interestingly, this is a follow-up to a device that is yet to be released.

The images don’t reveal much by means of specifications. However, it does show that Sony is not backing away from its OmniBalance design, which was supposed to be phased out with the Xperia Z2, having originally appeared on the Sony Xperia Z at the start of 2013.

This is a set of internal standards that relate to the build and layout of phone, and is aimed to enhance the ease-of-use and create a consistant aesthetic.

Earlier leaks suggested that the Sony Xperia Z3 would be thinner than the Xperia Z2, measuring 7mm in thickness, and sport a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, 1080p display, 3GB of RAM and a 20.7-megapixel rear camera. Based on the way the competition is moving, both display and processor may well be even beefier come launch time.

Sony is expected to debut the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact at the Berlin IFA consumer electronics trade fair in September later this year. The IFA conference will also see another major launch, with Samsung revealing its fourth generation Galaxy Note, widely known as the Galaxy Note 4.
