Sony’s Xperia M2 boasts affordable 4G (MWC 2014)

The Sony’s Xperia M2 is a mid-range maestro that might be music to your ears, if Sony’s flagship Xperias are a little too out of your price range.

Although the major Sony headlines were snapped up at MWC 2014 by its Xperia Z2 smartphone and uber-thin Xperia Z2 Tablet, the more cash-strapped amongst us should take a look at Sony’s Xperia M2. This mid-range Android Jelly Bean handset (price TBC) packs a 4.8-inch qHD screen and 4G LTE support.

The Xperia M2 feels lighter than its more expensive brethren, the Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z2, but it sports a similar style. The plastic frame is still rectangular, with a silver rim and the usual circular power button. We’re pleased to see a microSD slot to expand the limited storage and a physical shutter button for taking shots.

Despite touting a sub-220 Euros price tag, Sony has crammed some decent features into the Xperia M2, not least the 8-megapixel camera with Exmor RS sensor. Promising stuff, and it should be one of the better snappers around at this price point.

The snapper comes with Superior Auto mode to shoot crisp and colourful pics, plus the range of features found on the Xperia Z1 Compact and a couple of new ones such as Background Defocus. Only 4k video and slow-motion mode are conspicuous by their absence, which is to be expected at this price point.

As well as 4G LTE support, performance should be dependable (if not spectacular) thanks to a quad-core 1.2GHz SnapDragon 400 processor. That’s the same chip found in the excellent Motorola Moto G. While you only get Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box, Sony has said a KitKat upgrade could arrive soon.

Here’s hoping the Xperia M2 doesn’t sink as fast as the M2 motorway did this month, but we’ll find out in March-April when the phone hits UK stores.
