Sony’s been making waves in the world of smartphone photography with the likes of the new Xperia Z1 Compact, so we thought why not test it against one of the most popular smartphone in the world, the iPhone, specifically the 5S, with it’s improved 8-megapixel sensor?
In the blue corner, Rory Reid with Apple’s iPhone 5S, and in the red corner, Alex ‘Toddy’ Toddy, toting a Sony Xperia Z1 Compact. The former boasts an 8-megapixel sensor with larger pixels than any previous iPhone, allowing more light in for each image. Thanks to iOS 7, the camera UI also lets you switch seamlessly between still and video, panorama, square and slow-motion modes, with addition capabilities like burst-mode shooting, a tap away.
The Xperia Z1 Compact meanwhile, squeezes the huge camera sensor from the full-sized Z1 into a smartphone that’s significantly more, well, compact, yet retains all of the premium imaging capabilities of its predecessor. Not only can the Z1 Compact take 20-megapixel stills, it can shoot in Full HD video, boasts full manual control for things like white balance or exposure and it can even stream to Facebook.
Bearing in mind what’s at stake, we wanted to test these cameras on something more than pedestrians and traffic in Central London, so gave Jason Forde of One Wheel Motion a call in order to make things a little more interesting. Jason’s BMX skills were put to the test as we evaluated both smartphones for their camera’s image quality, feature set and video capabilities.
