Xperia Play: PlayStation Classics flop. Total game sales under 3000

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play married PlayStation controls to an Android phone.

According to PlayStation Lifestyle, no games have managed to top 1000 download sales on the smartphone.

Although the only game to arrive free with the PlayStation-certified devices was Crash Bandicoot, several more games were also available for purchase, including Destruction Derby and Cool Boarders.

But for many manchild (or ladychild) gamers, it was a pretty dull line-up. Bigger titles from the PlayStation back catalogue were conspicuously absent (what, not Resident Evil?) and so it may not come as a huge surprise to hear that the PlayStation games aren’t selling well.

Breaking it down by game, estimated downloads so far are;

  • Cool Boarders 2: 100-500
  • Destruction Derby: 500-1,000
  • Jumping Flash: 50-100
  • MediEvil: 100-500
  • Syphon Filter: 100-500

Sony Ericsson’s head of market development, Dominic Neil-Dwyer, told PL that: “There’s (sp.) no concerns, it’s a revolutionary device, it’s shaking up the market, we’re very pleased with it. In terms of getting the PlayStation Certified program out. Generally, we’re very happy.”

“We know there’s a lot more to come that we’re not, obviously, releasing yet. We’re releasing as we go, rather than telling everyone the full story, and I think everyone appreciates that you have a good line-up at the start of selling a device… and the feedback we got on that line-up is that it is a good line-up, so we’re very happy where we are.”

We think the Xperia Play isn’t dead in the water just yet- but it really needs to start pumping out those cult games we loved back in the 90s. We could’ve given them more constructive feedback on the release line-up; we even made a list.
