Yahoo Mail to blame for Windows Phone 7 ‘phantom data’ bug

Windows Phone 7 customers have been suffering from a from a mysterious data leak bug, causing their phone to send out 3G data, even when connected to WiFi.

After Microsoft decided to investigate it themselves, and announced that they had found what was responsible last week, they refused to name the third-party company. Then, last night, they did; it was all Yahoo Mail’s fault.

In their statement, they said that “an inefficiency exists in the synchronisation of email between the Windows Phone Mail client and Yahoo Mail. This inefficiency can result in larger than expected data usage for a very small percentage of users.”

Microsoft said that it would take a few weeks to fix the problem- perhaps they could include it in the forthcoming Windows Phone 7 software update promised last month.

Most complaints about the bug came from the US, where several customers discovered that they were eating into their data plans, even while asleep. The error looks like it was forcing phones to download up to 25 times more information than necessary through Yahoo Mail accounts,
