Today Xperia Blog is just the gift that keeps on giving with some fantastic detailing on the WhiteMagic technology brought to the surface once again after the Sony Xperia P was announced to be sporting it yesterday. For anyone wondering why they should care about WhiteMagic, the purported benefits Sony suggests are improved outdoor viewing and more efficient indoor power consumption.
This is achieved by including a white sub-pixel. While the normal organisation for sub-pixels in a single pixel is red, green and blue as can be seen in the diagram below to the left, the diagram to the right illustrates what a WhiteMagic pixel looks like. Automatically detecting whether indoors or out, the backlight can now pass through just the white sub-pixel in order to communicate white, as opposed to all three primary sub-pixels – thus using less power.
Expected to arrive in Q2 2012, the Sony Xperia P, WhiteMagic in tow will cost €449 (Roughly £387)and will be a high mid-range device to rival the likes of the HTC One S. You can find more information on the device here, along with some pretty stunning marketing videos and a 3D tour.
