Will my LG Optimus phone get the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update?

Will your LG phone get Android 2.3 Gingerbread? Had sleepless nights, wondering if you’ll get Google’s latest smartphone OS?

We’ve been in contact with LG to see which phones will be getting upgrades to Android 2.3, and we can exclusively reveal some broad release dates for each phone’s Android Gingerbread update.

Already available on Google flagship phones like the Nexus One, Nexus S and recent high-end Android phones like the HTC Desire S and Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, LG’s 2011 phone range will currently arrive running Android 2.2, but an LG spokesperson told Recombu that all three new Optimus phones will get Gingerbread in 2011.

The dual-cored LG Optimus 2X will get upgraded sometime in July and August, while the glasses-free 3D screen and camera-toting Optimus 3D will also get an upgrade in August, “subject to operator approval”, we’ve been told. (This has been backed up by LG Denmark here, though they suggest a more optimistic mid-May release.)

Similarly, LG Optimus Black is also set to get Android 2.3 upgrade in August, but this broad release date is also subject to the phone networks.

We’re still waiting to hear back from LG UK on whether their slightly older Optimus One will get an upgrade to Android 2.3. On their US site, LG have announced that Android 2.3 will come to the Optimus One, so fingers crossed we get the same treatment this side of the Atlantic.

Why should you want Android Gingerbread? Aside from a speed boost, better battery life, you’ll also get easier download and app management, able to see exactly what’s running on your phone.

There’s also an improved keyboard, and the web browsing experience is an even smoother affair. There’s even better app management, so you can see what’s currently running on your phone.

Android upgrade release dates often depend on the UK phone networks, who cooperate with phone makers to “broadcast” phone updates across the network. This is known as an OTA (Over-the-air) update.

Fingers crossed, these updates should arrive this summer, not too long after they arrive in the shops.
