2013 Skoda Octavia vRS is fast, frugal, flippin’ spacious

Skodas are boring, right? Well, no, actually, they’ll get your pulse racing and your trouser tenting in no time, especially if they’ve got a vRS badge on. Case in point: the 2013 Skoda Octavia vRS is powerful enough to rip your face off.

Two engines are available, including the top of the line 217bhp, 2.0-litre petrol unit borrowed from the VW Golf GTI. With this, the Octavia vRS will accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 6.8 seconds, generating 258lb/ft of torque as it goes. Those with concerns of frugality have the option of a slower 2.0-litre diesel with 181bhp and 280lb/ft of torque, which allows a 0-62mph time of 8.1 seconds.

Neither model should be particularly thirsty. Skoda says the new vRS uses up to 19 per cent less fuel than the outgoing model, thanks to a Start-Stop system and Brake Energy Regeneration.

Both engines will come with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, but in case you prefer flappy paddles a DSG transmission will be an option. Hatchback and estate versions are promised.

Whichever version you go for, expect sports suspension with a multi-link rear axle and an electronic differential to further improve handling. Distinctive honeycomb air intakes, LED day running lights, bi-xenon headlights, 17- and 19-inch alloys, a rear spoiler, twin exhausts and a moody vRS-style front bumper should help convince onlookers they’re dealing with something a bit tasty.

Jumping into the cockpit reveals a redesigned instrument panel, a three-spoke steering wheel, lots of stainless steel bits and bobs including the pedals and sporty seats on which to plonk your derrière.
Expect to see the Octavia vRS in its third-generation on sale in July, 2013. Prices are expected to start from £22,500.
