American muscle is about to get even more muscular. US car website Auto Blog reports the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT will pack a vastly more potent punch than previously thought. Think 707 horses underneath that bright red, vented bonnet.

Dodge says the Challenger SRT Hellcat is “the most powerful muscle car ever”. We’re guessing they mean production, which seems a fair claim when its 6.2-litre HEMI Hellcat engine develops a whopping 707 horsepower and 650lb/ft of torque. Unless you count this one-of-a-kind Shelby GT500.

Much of the Hellcat’s potency stems from the supercharged V8, which debuts in the Challenger SRT, while an TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic (upgraded specially to cope with the extra power) and hefty front and rear tyres help put that power to the tarmac.

You get two sets of keys with the new Dodge. A black key only gives you 500hp to play with, making it perfect for lazier days. Use the red key and you get the whole shebang. Lastly, there is a new interior said to be inspired by the 1971 Challenger.

Dodge (perhaps wisely) omitted the fuel economy and CO2 emissions figures from the official announcement, seeing as this particular engine is going to drink fossil fuel for a pastime. Not that people care in a country where fuel is significantly cheaper than it is in Europe.

A price is yet to be revealed, but we know the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat will arrive at your local Dodge dealership in the “third quarter of 2014”. A European release is, sadly, not mentioned.

We’ll let the following official video and images do the rest of the talking.
