Audi A3 Saloon shown off at New York Motor Show

Fancy an Audi A3 but don’t like the slightly cutesy look of the hatchback or A3 Sportback versions? Audi’s got your back — the company’s used the New York Motor Show to unveil a new Audi A3 Saloon — a more grown up take on the A3 format.

The new Audi A3 Saloon strikes a pretty decent balance between a typical ‘three-box’ saloon and a coupe. It has the same wheelbase as an A3 Sportback, but is 15mm longer, and relatively short front and rear overhangs prevent it from intruding on the slightly longer (by 25mm) Audi A4.

The extra length gives it more room inside, so it’s arguably more suited to car pooling with your fellow junior executives. You’ll be able to fit more double glazing leaflets (or whatever it is you’re selling) in the boot as well. The A3 Saloon has an impressive 425 litres of room back there – 45 litres more than you get in the A3 Sportback.

The Audi A3 Saloon will come with a choice of three engines at launch, each completely redesigned for this model. The efficiency-oriented 1.4-litre TFSI 140PS unit delivers a healthy 250Nm of torque and a diesel-baiting 60.1mpg plus 109 grams per kilometre of CO2. It’s no slouch, either, managing 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds and a 132mph top speed.

A 1.8-litre TFSI engine offers a more pokey 180PS and 250Nm of torque, which is good for a 7.3-second 0-62mph sprint time and 144mph top speed, but that’s at the expense of fuel economy – expect 49.6mpg and 135g/km of CO2. Audi also offers a 2.0-litre diesel TDI that manages 150PS, 320Nm, 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds, a 132mph max speed and 67.3mpg with 108g/km.

Expect plenty of tech in the A3 Saloon. The car will use Audi’s modular infotainment system, which incorporates a 7-inch nav screen, optional Bang & Olufsen speakers, a 705-watt amplifier and an optional LT3/4G telephone module that lets you use the car as a wireless hotspot.

Price & availability

The Audi A3 Saloon will be available to order in the UK this summer – whenever that might be. Audi hasn’t yet confirmed pricing, but expect it to cost slightly more than the £18,560 hatchback version.
