Audi has increased the length of the A8 L luxury saloon with the introduction of an extended model.
The Audi A8 L Extended offers oodles of space for six passengers, thanks to being 1.1m longer than the standard A8 L. Total length is 6.36 metres (20.9ft), while the wheelbase is 4.22 metres (13.8ft).
It was created at the request of a European customer and took nearly a year to develop, with much of that time spent on increasing the rigidity of the Audi Space Frame and extending the side sills and centre tunnel using extruded aluminium sections.
To help keep the lengthy cabin bright, Audi has fitted a 2.4-metre (7.9ft) glass panel in the roof. Meanwhile all seats are made from Valcona leather and face forward to give passengers a view of where they are going.
Individual seats in rows two and three can be electrically adjusted for a more comfortable ride. Just in case occupants get thirsty, there’s a cool box in the third row as well as a rear seat entertainment display for watching films.
Limousine vehicles are usually fairly slow but Audi has gone against convention by fitting a 310PS 3.0-litre TFSI, which propels the A8 L Extended from 0-62mph in 7.1 seconds and onto an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. Torque is 440Nm (324.5lb/ft).
Part of the impressive acceleration is down to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system, which helps give the 2,418kg saloon maximum traction at all times, and an eight-speed tiptronic automatic gearbox.
While there’s no word on a price, Audi has said it has already received more orders for others to be made. Best to get on the phone if the idea of an Audi A8 limo excites you.
