Expect to pay from £24,900 for the Audi S1 pocket rocket. Take our money already.
The cat was very much out of the bag when it came to the existence of the three-door Audi S1 and its five-door S1 Sportback sibling. Only now, however, do we know how much it will cost, how fast it will go and just when it will go on sale. You’re welcome.
The 2014 Audi S1 and S1 Sportback are powered by a 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engine that produces 231PS (228bhp) and 370Nm (273lb/ft) of torque ─ a healthy dose of oomph for such a pint-sized car and considerably more than the 183bhp found in the top-spec 1.4TFSI.
0 to 62mph takes 5.8 seconds for the S1 and a tenth of a second slower for the S1 Sportback. Both cars top out at 155mph. A Vauxhall Astra VXR, in comparison, manages a 0 to 62mph time of 5.9 seconds, while the VW Golf GTI Performance Pack takes 6.4 seconds.
The Audi S1 is pretty good at sipping fuel, depending, of course, on your ability to resist finding out what 228 ponies in a small car feels like. The S1 can manage 40.3mpg and 162g/km of CO2 emissions, while the S1 Sportback offer slightly less at 39.8mpg and 166g/km ─ not far off the 47.9mpg 1.4TFSI but significantly less than the same engine with cylinder on demand.
Enthusiasts will be pleased to know the S1 comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox and Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive as well as revised suspension and electromechanical steering, 17-inch alloys as standard (18-inch is an option), LED rear lights, xenon headlights and S-specific styling such as the quad exhausts.
Two new paintjobs – Vegas yellow (pictured) and Sepang blue – have been added to the existing line-up. An optional ‘sculpted roof spoiler’ forms part of the optional quattro exterior styling package.
The S1’s interior is comprised black Fine Nappa leather. A choice of three colours is available for the backrest if you go for the quattro interior styling package. Other optional extras include a hard disc-based MMI navigation system, keyless entry, Bose speakers and Audi connect.
The Audi S1 and S1 Sportback will go on sale from the middle of March 2014 priced from £24,900 and £25,630, respectively. Deliveries are expected to start in Spring.
We think the Audi S1 has bags of character and should go like the clappers ─ what do you reckon?
