The sporty Audi S3 has lost its roof ahead of the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.
Audi has announced the S3 Cabriolet, presumably, so when the rain stops we will have a performance hatchback that will allow us to bask in the sun’s rays. The new model will debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
The S3 Cabriolet has a fabric roof with an insulating layer of foam that helps reduce noise. It can be opened and closed in 18 seconds at speeds up to 31mph. Three roof colours are available.
Power comes from the same 2.0-litre 296bhp petrol engine found in the Sportback and Saloon mated to a six-speed s tronic transmission, which means the S3 Cabriolet has a sizable 300PS (296bhp) on tap. Sadly the extra 200kg necessary for open-top motoring brings the 0 to 62mph time down to 5.4-seconds ─ a considerable drop compared with the 4.8 seconds it takes the S3 hatchback.
The S3 Cabriolet’s kerb weight of 1,620kg also has a negative effect on efficiency. The S3 Cabriolet manages 39.8mpg and 165g/km of CO2 emissions, compared with the 40.9mpg and 159g/km for the hatchback. Boot space drops from 320-litres to 275-litres with the roof down.
It’s worth noting Audi opted to use the A3 Saloon as the underpinnings and not the A3 Cabrio, which explains why the S3 Cabriolet is bigger.
To help increase the S3 Cabriolet’s appeal Audi has fitted it with 19-inch alloys, bodykit and sports suspension that sees the car ride 25mm lower. The interior benefits from sports seats and lots of S-tweaks including a sporty steering wheel.
First deliveries will arrive in September. No word on a price just yet ─ stay tuned.
