Audi A6 ‘ultra’ is a more efficient beast

Audi A6 2.0 TDI ultra headlines a number of new models that offer ‘class-leading’ efficiency.

Audi is making the A4, A5 Coupé, A5 Sportback and A6 models even more frugal, thanks to the addition of a new ‘ultra’ variant. The new model offers improved CO2 emissions and fuel economy and is on sale now.

The Audi A6 2.0 TDI ultra benefits from a brand new 2.0-litre diesel engine. Power is 190PS and torque is 400Nm ─ a sizable increase over the outgoing 2.0-litre TDI’s 177PS and 380Nm of torque. A 0 to 62mph time of 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 144mph is promised.

With the seven-speed S tronic transmission in tow the A6 ultra can manage 64.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 114g/km, which is significantly more than the 56.5mpg and 132g/km offered by its diesel predecessor. The extra efficiency afforded by the ultra A6 is not compensated by price or equipment.

Part of the improved efficiency comes from what Audi calls the SCR system. As powertrain development head Dr Stefan Knirsch explained, “An innovative, highly efficient SCR system removes nitrogen oxides from the exhaust. This measure means that the new ultra models will of course meet the future Euro 6 emission standards while achieving lower fuel consumption.”

The ultra has the option of SE, S line and Black Edition specifications just like the other A6 variants, depending on how much extra equipment you are willing to pay for. Only a ‘subtle’ ultra badge differentiates the most eco-friendly variant from its thirstier siblings.

Standard equipment on the A6 includes full leather upholstery, MMI Radio Plus with a 6.5-inch colour display, DAB digital radio, SD card-based navigation, automatic headlights and wipers, cruise control, keyless go and Audi’s parking system plus.

Prices start from £32,515 for the (£125 less than the 2.0 TDI 177PS) SE S tronic Saloon, rising to £36,540 for the Black Edition S tronic. The most expensive model in the range is the Black Edition S tronic, which starts from £38,540.

Audi said to expect ultra versions of the A4, A5 Coupé and A5 Sportback later in 2014. We’ll keep you posted.
