BBR ‘Super 200’ upgrade makes the Mazda MX-5 more menacing

The Mazda MX-5 is often heralded as a truly great sports car that needs no extra horsepower, but for those who disagree BBR has a solution.

The Brackley-based tuning company has announced its ‘Super 200’ package, which, as the name kind of suggests, boosts the output of the 2.0-litre MX-5 to 205bhp and 180lb/ft of torque – an increase of 45bhp.

Once fitted, BBR says the new MX-5 can sprint from 0-60mph in 5.65 seconds, down from the standard car’s 7.3 seconds. This is partly thanks to a sizable increase in torque, an extra 30lb/ft of which is available from 3,500rpm.

BBR is keen to point out Mazda’s electronic safety features, MOT emissions compliance and standard idle characteristics are retained, while a 12 to 36-month extendable warranty is available for added peace of mind.

The Super 200 upgrade is comprised a ‘high performance’ billet steel intake and exhaust camshafts with upgraded valve springs, specially developed cold air intake system, bespoke four into one tuned length stainless steel exhaust system and BBR’s StarChip ECU software package, which adjusts fuel, ignition and cam timing calibration.

Those who want even more power can opt for the ‘Super 200+’. By adding a 2.5-inch TIG welded stainless steel exhaust section (£495) and stainless steel 2.5-inch BBR silences (£395), power is increased to 214bhp and torque by 3lb/ft.

Still not quite content? BBR can fit a gasflowed cyclinder head, which it claims can add an extra 10bhp, taking the total to a considerable 225bhp. It is unclear how much performance is improved for the price-on-application upgrade.

Sports suspension can be specced in the form of Koni adjustable dampers for a sharper turn in and ‘superior body control’. Yours for £995 fitted and £695 if you do it yourself.

An adjustable anti-roll bar kit from Eibach and Willwood four-piston brake calipers upgrade package are also available, priced from £312.25 and £595, respectively.

Prices start from £2,195 for the BBR Super 200 package and you can order one now. The Mazda MX-5 necessary, meanwhile, costs from £21,095.
