Let’s get the bad news out of the way. The M3 coupe is dead. It doesn’t exist any more. BMW will henceforth only offer the M3 in four-door saloon form. If you want your two-door coupe itch scratched you’ll need to opt for the BMW M4.
Can we move on now? Happy? Good, because although the new, slightly sensible M3 is carrying a pair of extra doors, it’s every bit the motorised maniac. BMW has ditched the 4.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 that powered the previous M3 in favour of a 3.0-litre turbocharged engine.
This unit provides marginally more power, with all of it available near the 7,600rpm redline, and 40 per cent more torque – deployed seemingly the moment the shadow of your big toe crosses the accelerator.
0-62mph is taken care of in 4.1 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155mph, though the Performance Pack upgrade takes the shackles off for a 174mph peak velocity.
